Renewal - Spring, Detox and Coming Home

Writer: William LivingstoneWilliam Livingstone

Stress from Chaos

There’s something about this time of year that always makes me pause - and wake up. The air softens, the light changes, and even the trees seem to exhale. Here in Israel, you can feel spring slowly stretching its fingers after the chill of winter — not quite fully here yet, but definitely making itself known.

The last few years have been pretty tough. On most people. On me. Covid-19 with its fears and restrictions was quickly followed by a sense of societal dystopia led by an uncaring and unfeeling government and this grew into a cacophony of pain and disbelief with an unwanted war. Looking around the world - and not just locally, I perceive a deep polarity - everywhere. An impression of chaos, of doom, of every accepted norm being tossed aside in a paroxysm of almost total destruction.

With the result for many, if not most of us, of increased stress and reduced functionality. A difficult time for mankind and womankind - and every other kind.

I have lost some in this period - people who were close to me, parts of my health, a fair bit of money, the world I thought I knew. It took me some time to realize that, I too was in stress, deep debilitating stress.

But nothing ever stays the same for ever. As I gradually became aware of my own frozen state, I found the inner strength to thaw. To allow spring to come back in. For me, spring has always felt like a personal reset button. To start all over again. Maybe it’s because I’m a naturopathic physician, so I live with the cycles of nature running quietly in the background of my work. Or maybe it’s just something human — this deep pull to shed layers, clear out what’s heavy, and breathe in something new.

Either way, this season speaks directly to the part of me that loves renewal. With growing awareness, I began a months-long process that has allowed me to reset - to shed some of my layers. I’ve used herbs and food and water, breathing and moving. I’ve read a ton of books, spiritual and healing. I’ve adopted some new, for me, perspectives. On life and living. And most of all, I’ve given myself the time and space to do the reset, to heal.

And, yes, I do feel much better than I did for quite a while. Am I healed - totally? No way. But definitely on my way. All of what I’ve used has helped. But, perhaps the greatest help has been my understanding - or more to the point, my remembering - that I have no control, absolutely no control, over anything - any person, any situation, any thing. Other than myself, that is - and even that with the greatest of difficulty.

I can control how I respond. At least, much better than before.

I am reminded here of Victor Frankel’s most powerful words: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

(Viktor E. Frankl, “Man's Search for Meaning”)

I find myself less distressed than in the past by all that happens around me. I’m more able to see it all as a game, a great game - or even as a circus with me as a spectator. As this ability grows in me, my feelings of peace and calm are softly restored. And as I grow in more peace and calm, so I feel better, happier. Closer to home.

This kind of disconnection is so common, especially if we’ve been living with pain or stress for a long time. We leave ourselves in a way — disconnecting so we don’t have to feel. But healing, true healing, often means gently finding our way back home.

Spring Cleaning for the Body and Soul

I once had a patient, Rina, who came to me after a particularly tough winter. She was tired all the time, her digestion was off, and her stress levels were sky-high. “I feel like I’m dragging around a heavy coat I can’t take off,” she told me.

That’s such a perfect description of what so many of us feel this time of year. We’ve been holding tension and stress in our muscles, eating heavier foods to stay warm, maybe sleeping less than we should. By the time spring arrives, we’re more than ready to shed that coat — we just need a bit of guidance to do it.

That’s where the idea of detox comes in. Now, detoxing is a loaded word, but I’m not talking about extreme juice cleanses or punishing fasts. What I do mean is something much gentler: supporting the body’s natural ability to clear out waste, release stuck energy, and renew itself. This might look like simple dietary changes — adding more greens and bitter foods to support the liver, drinking herbal teas that gently move things along, or even just drinking more water. Seriously, so many of us are walking around mildly dehydrated and wondering why we feel foggy.

As part of my own journey, I discovered that I was averaging about two glasses of water on a good day. And suffering from pretty bad sleep and chronic fatigue. In the last few months I’ve raised up that daily quantity to over two liters a day. My sleep is much better and my chronic fatigue is gradually dissipating.

So, if you only do one thing - drink water - you can improve your health exponentially.

Detox also means releasing the emotional and energetic “waste” we accumulate. This part is close to my heart because, as a medical intuitive, I see so clearly how much the body and mind are entwined. That tight shoulder? It might be holding an old frustration you’ve never really processed. That sluggish digestion? It could have something to do with the stress you’ve swallowed down instead of speaking up about.

Renewal isn’t just physical — it’s emotional and spiritual too.

Coming Back to Ourselves

Another client, David, came to see me after years of chronic pain. Doctors had told him, “You’ll just have to live with it.” He was taking medications that dulled the pain a bit, but they also dulled him. He felt disconnected from his own body, like it wasn’t really his anymore.

We worked on this from a few directions. I supported his body with herbs and nutrition, yes — but we also worked energetically, helping him rebuild a sense of safety and ease within his own skin. Slowly, he began to trust his body again. His pain softened, but more than that, he began to feel more like himself again.

Invitation to Renew

If you’re feeling like Rina or David — or me - weighed down, disconnected, stressed, fatigued with or without pain - but unsure how to begin again — know that renewal is always possible. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s as simple as drinking a cleansing tea in the morning or stepping outside to feel the sunlight on your skin. Sometimes it’s deeper work — releasing old patterns, learning to trust your body again, or just allowing yourself to feel.

This is what I do, both as a naturopathic physician and a medical intuitive: I help people find their way back to themselves. Whether you’re curious about gentle detox, need support managing pain, or just want to feel more alive again, spring is a beautiful time to begin.

So, here’s to renewal — to shedding our heavy coats, breathing deep, and coming back to who we really are.

If this speaks to you, I’d love to invite you to schedule a consultation with me. Together, we can explore what renewal means for you, and create a plan that supports your body, mind, and spirit in the way you need right now.

I’m totally bilingual in Hebrew and English (both of them with my native Scottish accent …).
